Go-Givers aims to help children develop an understanding of - and empowers them to defend - human/children's rights. Our resources are therefore invaluable if you are working towards the next level of the RRSA; are already an accredited Rights-Respecting School; or simply want to embed a rights-respecting ethos through cross-curricular PSHCE delivery.

This newsletter highlights just a few lessons that directly support the standards of the Rights-Respecting Schools Award.

Children taking action in their communities

  Rights and Responsibilities

KS1: 'Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody'

Using the traditional poem, these four colourful characters introduce the concepts of making excuses, taking responsibility and lending a 'helping hand'.

KS2: 'Getting the Balance Right'
Discuss the balance between individual rights versus protecting society and the rights of others, including freedom of speech, privacy and freedom of movement.

'My learning objectives were very much achieved: for individuals in class to become more reflective learners/people and to learn that for every right there is an equal level of responsibility.' -Clive Rockell, Headteacher & Year 5/6 Teacher, Wookey Primary, Somerset

Global Justice

KS1: 'Africa'
As children learn about how access to rights can differ across the world, it is important to counter dominant ideas about countries in the developing world by giving children a balanced picture. Also applicable to KS2.
KS2: 'All for Profit'
A chance for children to brainstorm what rights should be universal and how many children's rights are denied globally through the issue of child labour and trafficking and understanding the global marketplace.  A look at charities including UNICEF tackling the issue.

'Go-Givers has improved our children's understanding of events in the world and how to respond to people and places in need' -Sarah Hobbs, Y3 Teacher, Brookside Primary, Somerset

 Sustainable Living

KS1: 'Expedition to Planet Blueball'
An animated story about how creatures from another planet help the Go-Givers clean up the Earth, including basics about pollution and sustainable power.
'I love the animation and the wording and content are just right for the age group.' -Anonymous teacher
KS2: 'Sustainable Development'
A pictorial quiz representing problems and solutions to prompt discussion about how we can live more sustainably in our personal lives and in school.
 Children making a difference

  (Every) Day for Change

Friday 3rd February is UNICEF's Day for Change. But of course children can make a change in their communities every day! Remind children that no one - and no amount of money - is too small to make a difference using 'You Can't Buy Anything With a Penny.'

This year's UNICEF theme is
Sports for Development. Stay tuned for Go-Givers Olympics modules coming soon.

Go-Givers Clubs

Why not give your children a chance to put their PSHCE learning into action? Go-Givers Clubs are an innovative way to let children take the creative lead after school around a theme they care about. We are looking for teachers to pilot Go-Givers Club activities found here. Contact marguerite.heath@citizenshipfoundation.org.uk to inquire further.
