Teefa's Blog

My name is Latifah but everyone calls me Teefa for short. I am 10 years old. My mum is from Nigeria and Latifah is an African name meaning 'gentle'. Clothes are really important to me and my friends and we always get the latest fashion.
At school, I get into trouble for talking too much and being bossy. I don't mean to be naughty, but sometimes I get shy and then I talk too much to cover it up.

Hair, listening and problems!!

Hi everyone! I can't believe all the blog messages you have written to me - it's so cool to hear from you and thank you for all the great compliments about my earrings and hair. I have to let you in on a little secret.....it's not all my hair, it's extensions and it takes hours to do!!! Every 6-8 weeks my Auntie Gerda comes over and spends hours sorting out my hair. She takes out all the old extensions, which can be a little painful and very boring, but luckily Auntie Gerda likes to chat and so while she's doing my hair she tells the most amazing stories about her life. Once she has taken out all the old extensions, I choose which length I would like the new ones to be and she begins the long process of plaiting my hair and adding the extended hair in. I am sure there are some of you who have had extensions done too.  I love my extensions!

I can also see from your messages, that it is not just me who gets into trouble for talking too much in class, and like me, some of you are trying to listen more to your teacher and do better in your work. If some of you are still struggling with this, I think that now is the best time to start. It's the beginning of a new year and I am determined to make some changes to the way I behave. One of these is to listen more to my teacher. She is right. I can't talk to my friends and listen properly at the same time. Whenever she is giving out useful and important instructions and I don't listen 100%, I always find the work much more difficult. So this school year I AM going to be a good listener!! And another thing, I am going to try to be more gentle and less bossy.  As most of you know my name means gentle, and I know I am not a mean bossy person, but I do boss my friends around a bit too much so sometimes they get annoyed with me. So from now on I'm going to try really hard to be more considerate, and if I need a little help with something, I am going to ask nicely and more gently. Do you think that is a good idea?

Sometimes you can solve problems yourself, like talking too much or being bossy with your friends, by trying really hard to behave differently. However, sometimes it helps to get advice about what to do from someone else. One of the best things my Auntie Gerda and my mum have taught me is a ‘problem shared is a problem halved'. It just means that if you share a problem by telling someone about it they can usually make even big problems much smaller! In my last blog some of you decided to tell me some of your problems. It's a good idea to tell people you know and trust about your problems, but when you tell somebody you haven't met before something on the internet other people might see your message because it isn't always private.   Also, I can't help you straight away and I want to make sure your get your problems solved as quickly as possible. So, the best thing to do is always choose an adult, like your parents, a teacher, TA or an aunt or uncle to help you - someone you trust and feel comfortable with. They will hopefully be able to help you solve your problem quickly and get you back to being happy and smiley.

Have a brilliant new term and don't forget to tell me how you are getting on with listening in class or being gentle with your friends - or if you know what it's like to sit for hours and have your hair done!

Just remember, never share anything private on the internet and use the words ‘someone', ‘a friend' or ‘a teacher' instead of names.
