Ahmeti's Blog

My name is Ahmeti, I am 13 years old.
Lots of things have changed in my life so I often feel insecure.
A few years ago, my family fled from Kosovo. I still remember running through the woods to escape from the soldiers.
I love learning new things and I pick things up quickly at school but I’m still catching up with the others in my class.

Ramadan at my house

Did you have a good summer holiday? What did you do? Write to me. I would love to know!

My summer was extra special because it was Ramadan! My family is Muslim. We moved to England from Kosovo a few years ago. For Muslims, Ramadan is a holy month. It's a serious time of year, but my house is always filled with family, friends, warmth and excitement.

My religion teaches that you should help other people, especially people who have less than you. Ramadan is a time when Muslims remind themselves to think of others.  One of the special things that Muslims do during Ramadan is to not eat or drink anything from dawn until sunset. This is called fasting.

I fasted during Ramadan and it helped me understand how hard it would be to be hungry all the time. Sometimes you need to walk in someone else's shoes to really understand how they might feel.

In the late afternoon during Ramadan, wonderful smells waft up the stairs from the kitchen to my bedroom... of onions frying, lamb roasting or bread baking. That's when I know it will soon be sunset, my favourite part of the day when my family come together to eat at the end of a long day fasting. This meal has a special name called iftar.

Dad likes to cook traditional food from Kosovo during Ramadan because it reminds him of the place he grew up. Some evenings he makes my favourite food for me, fried pastry filled with cheese, called burek. Yum! I could eat it every day. What's does your favourite food remind you of?

At the end of Ramadan is a huge celebration called Eid-ul-fitr! I get lots of presents and it's one of my favourite times of year! I'll tell you about it in my next blog.

What's your favourite time of year?
