Ahmeti's Blog

My name is Ahmeti, I am 13 years old.
Lots of things have changed in my life so I often feel insecure.
A few years ago, my family fled from Kosovo. I still remember running through the woods to escape from the soldiers.
I love learning new things and I pick things up quickly at school but I’m still catching up with the others in my class.

All About Kosovo

School is going so well lately! Sometimes I struggle to keep up with everyone in the class, but recently we had a project where everyone had to pick a foreign country to teach the class about. I asked if I could do Kosovo and my teacher said that she was hoping I would ask that.

I went home and did lots of research and came up with a really great presentation. I told my class that Kosovo has only been an independent country for a few years, since 2008. It was part of Serbia, but the population was almost completely from the neighboring country of Albania. The Albanians and the Serbians have fought over the province for centuries. In the 1990s, a leader named Slobodan Milosevic decided he didn't want Kosovo to be it's own country, and a war began between the Serbians and Albanians.

Kosovo is very poor, but it is doing better these days. The Serbian minority has it the hardest. The good news is that since the UN started helping, Albania and Serbia have made steps towards reconciling. I asked my teacher to log on to the Go-Givers site, and she pulled up the World Viewer on the projector screen. I pointed out to everyone the tiny spots that are Albania and Serbia, and where Kosovo would be labelled. I explained to everyone some of the cool things about Kosovo: Pristina's National Library, which was used by soldiers during the war but is now a beautiful place for books, and the Mosques, which are religious buildings for Muslims.

Everybody really enjoyed my presentation, and afterwards some of them asked if I wished I could move back to Kosovo, now that it's better there. I thought about it, and decided to say this:

"I love Kosovo because it's my homeland, but England is my home now. I don't think I'd want to back and live there now, but I want to go back someday in the future, when everything is finally peaceful, and the people are happy."
