My name is Callum, I am 14 years old.
I'm into skateboarding and action movies. I spend a lot of time out with my friends or just hanging around on my own.
I’m always getting angry and sometimes people are scared of me.
My Dad usually takes care of me, he’s at home a lot because he’s quite often unemployed.
A New Member of the Family

The weather’s getting better and all I want to do is spend time at the skatepark and out on the street with my mates. The summer term is always stressful at school, ‘cos of all the tests. Do you get stressed about tests at school? What do you do to relax? At least I can chill once I get home from school. When I get in I check out skateboarding videos on YouTube. There’s so much out there, and new stuff’s coming online all the time. It’s good to see other kids love skateboarding as much as me. I still want to be a pro skater. Only now I think there’s something else I might want to do too…


I spent a lot of time at my Mum’s over Easter. She chose the holiday to get a new member of the family; a dog! He’s called Jimmy. I think that’s a rubbish name.  I wanted to call him Snoop, or Sketchy or Zombie Dog, but Mum said that’s he was given the name Jimmy at the shelter and giving him a new name would confuse him. I don’t know what kind of dog he is. He’s medium size, with quite long brown fur. His tail has wavy bits on it, his ears are huge and he’s got black markings round his eyes like he’s got eye-liner on.


He’s a rescue dog. That means he wasn’t being looked after in his old home and had to be rescued. We don’t know exactly what went on, but he doesn’t like being near other dogs. He whines and runs away when he sees one. My Mum showed me some leaflets she got from the dog shelter. They showed horrible pictures of dogs that had been cruelly treated. It made me feel sick and angry.  I gave Jimmy a special cuddle after seeing those pictures. He licked my face and tried to curl up on my lap, even though he’s too big and kept falling off! Mum lets me walk Jimmy on my own now, as long as I pick up his mess and keep him on the lead. He’s part of Mum’s family now. Mum said that even though I live with dad I’m still part of her family, and Jimmy’s my dog too. That feels good.


I’ve got to make some choices about work experience at school soon. I think I might spend some time at the shelter, helping the dogs.  I’m good with Jimmy, so I might be able to make other dogs feel better too. What do you think?
