My name is Ahmeti, I am 13 years old.
Lots of things have changed in my life so I often feel insecure. A few years ago, my family fled from Kosovo. I still remember running through the woods to escape from the soldiers. I love learning new things and I pick things up quickly at school but I’m still catching up with the others in my class. Previous posts

Catching Up in School
Since moving to England, school has been great. I have made many great friends and enjoy all of my classes. I am still trying to catch up with homework and stuff. It can be hard because once I catch up on one thing, the class has moved on to something else. But for me, being a little bit behind in school, turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Ev When Ellie arrived at my house for the first day of tutoring, my mum was very welcoming. She made snacks and had drinks for us to have during our homework time. Ellie didn't say much to my mum. She was very quiet, besides a peep of ‘thank you' here and there. We headed into the dinning room to work on my homework. On the way in, my sister Luleta passed us on her way to her room. She stopped right in front of Ellie and only could say, ‘Oh my! You're tall!' as she stared up at her. Ellie didn't say anything. She just looked down at the ground. Luleta went on to her room and Ellie and I began to study. Even though Ellie was quiet, she became very talkative when it came to school. She was so smart! She knew every answer to every question I had. She was also a great teacher and I could understand the lessons a lot better with her help. We breezed through the homework, no problem. I asked if she wanted to hang out and play in my room or out in the yard. ‘Maybe you could even stay for dinner?' I asked. ‘I don't know if that would be a good idea,' she responded. ‘I don't know if you're family would want me to stay longer than I'm supposed to.' ‘Why would you think that? My mum loves to meet new friends of mine. And don't mind Luleta. She's always, well...weird. She didn't mean to point out... you know...how tall you are.' ‘Yeah. I am one of the tallest in my school. Taller than even some of the boys,' she said. ‘It can be embarrassing and I admit I am insecure about my height. No one really wants to be my friend. I suppose you don't understand. Everyone loves you.' I told her, ‘Now, I have lots of friends. But it didn't always use to be that way. When I first came to England, no one really talked to me and I felt left out. It wasn't fun. But one day, I decided to just be myself and open up to others. It turns out many of them wanted to get to know me, but they were just nervous, too. So be proud of who you are, Ellie. Sometimes I wish I was tall. I lost my Frisbee in the tree at school 3 months ago, and I still haven't been able to get it down. Haha.' ‘Really? Well I am tall and I could help you get your Frisbee down from the tree,' Ellie said. The next day at school during breaktime, Ellie got my Frisbee down from the tree. After 3 months, I finally had it. I was so happy! Everyone saw Ellie get my Frisbee. They thought it was so cool she was able to reach so high. After that, Ellie made many friends. She still continues to help me with my school work and we have become really great friends. Thanks to needing a tutor, I gained one of my best friends! |
